说话时钟 The Speaking Clock
Hi everyone, Try calling 1194 on your phone.
In the past,we in Melbourne could make a telephone call to the Post Office to hear what the correct time was.
In the beginning, people actually spoke the time, but in 1954 an automatic robot was brought from England to do the job.
The time was set for ” the third stroke” – you hear beep, beep, beep – the last beep is when the time is.
For example if it was 10:15 and 30 seconds, the announcement would say “At the third stroke,it will be 10:15 and thirty seconds beep, beep, beep”
Exactly on each minute, the announcer would use the word “precisely” – meaning “exactly”
eg At 10:15 the announcement would be “At the third stroke it will be 10:15 precisely beep, beep, beep”
